I am the full time music teacher at my elementary school. As most elementary schools in California do not have music programs, my students and I are extremely fortunate - and we know it! Last year I introduced recorder to my kids as a means of teaching music literacy, and to my great pleasure, they have taken playing this modest instrument to an extremely high level. They have learned to play sophisticated music and, most importantly, they have learned to play it musically. They immediately take technical and artistic suggestions and introduce them into their playing. Furthermore, they practice constantly. In fact, they have become so dedicated to their practicing that we have had to enact new school regulations for when and where to practice. Since securing funding for ukuleles via Donors Choose, these instruments have become a beloved addition to my music curriculum and I expect they will be for years to come.
