Long ago I realized that most of my students will not grow up to be historians or history teachers, but they will be expected to be reasonably functioning adults in our society. After this epiphany, I shifted my classes to use my curriculum topics to give students opportunities to practice their reading, writing, and synthesizing skills. A shift to real life skills has meant students experience more relevant success in my class. Skills like participating in a conversation without it devolving into an argument, fostering empathy for others, summarizing large idas into manageable chunks, and thinking globally in this modern world. I have found that tables are more comfortable for their body size as young adults (remember cramming into those one-size-fits-all desks?!) and facilitates the discussions that deepen their understanding of World History and their place in the human story. Having a more accommodating seating arrangement is a foundational first step in making my classroom a more discussion and problem solving focused class.
