Once film making was an art one could only learn at a film school reserved for a select few. Now with a small investment a high school student can learn how to make their own short films to tell their own story in their own way. By using the different apps on an IPad this task can be accomplished. They will learn how to use the Notes app to create scripts and story boards. Then the students can use the built in camera to both take pictures when needed and video to create their own footage. The Clips app and the iMovie app will both be used to teach the young film maker how to do basic editing. Along with this we will also be able to use the Garage Band app to create our own music score to go along with our independent film from time to time.
I have seen the industry change from expensive equipment suites that run in the thousands all the way down to my request of iPads that can do almost the same thing. When I teach my Intro-to- video classes we would use the iPad and all the mentioned apps to learn basic film making skills. As members of my 11th and 12th grade class, my students will use the iPads to contribute video footage and final segments to our school wide daily video show.
As this technology becomes more ingrained in everyday day life, it is my hope that as we use this technology in our class we are preparing them for the future. The skills that the students will learn using these iPads will follow them after they leave high school due to the fact that the IPad has become a major part of society.
