In my first two years as a Teach For America teacher, my students were 3rd through 5th grade English Language Learners who I taught English Language Arts in both monolingual and bilingual classroom settings. The school was PS 325 in West Harlem. It is one of the highest poverty schools in the city, and my students were among the lowest leveled readers in the school on account of their difficulty in overcoming barriers facing emerging bilingual students. I then taught Technology to all grades, K-5, at Harlem Prep Elementary in East Harlem. It's of a similar poverty level as PS 325. In addition to Technology, I taught small group literacy and worked as a dean for all grades. This year I am starting a Technology program for 2-5 graders at the Mission Preparatory School in San Francisco. This school too is among the highest poverty rates in its city.
