Ours is a high school in its fourth year of operation, built to relieve the overcrowded conditions at a nearby school, with a demographic of a largely Hispanic population at a socioeconomic disadvantage. I am an ESL and English teacher, and I find, to my dismay, that the rich artistic and literary affordances of a Hispanic background are not available to most of my students, many of whom have been subject to interrupted schooling or irregular family arrangements. This tradition is being supplanted by a media diet rich in videos, games, and movies, but largely devoid of any history. It grieves me that these traditions are being lost, and I am doing my utmost to make kids aware of their heritage.
