My students are diverse learners with unique experiences and backgrounds. They represent approximately a dozen different countries and the majority are current or former English Language Learners. We are a Title I, urban school district in Providence, RI and I teach students social studies. Together with my students, we engage in curturally and personally relevant discussions designed to challenge them to develop new understandings and ideas that build upon their interests and experiences. These students demonstrate a commendable work ethic and perseverance that humbles me. As their teacher, I recognize the challenge of learning an academic content while simultaneously learning the language in which it is taught. We all should have a chance to work with students like this sharing their frustrations, victories, and taking joy in watching them grow as individuals, learners, and as a community.
