My fourth-grade students attend Ludwig van Beethoven Elementary School in Chicago's historic Bronzeville community, on the former site of the Robert Taylor Homes, one of the world's largest public housing developments. Our school serves a diverse student population, with 91.8% identified as economically disadvantaged and 26.1% experiencing homelessness, according to Illinois state-reported data. Despite significant challenges, my students bring curiosity, creativity, resilience, and unique experiences to our classroom. As readers, writers, and young historians, they are developing their academic skills while learning to think critically, value different perspectives, and take ownership of their education. Together, we strive to build a classroom community grounded in intention, respect, and teamwork.
