Digital literacy and keyboarding are essential 21st-century skills for all students. The Common Core ELA Literacy standard W.3.6 requires that third graders be able to use technology to produce and publish writing (using keyboarding skills), as well as to interact and collaborate with others. With a Chromebook, students can tap in to the power of the Internet. Much different than iPads, these devices include keyboard perfect for small hands. Chromebooks help build essential keyboarding skills as they research, collaborate, learn, and create. There is no substitute for direct teaching, yet in order to meet in small groups, my students need to be actively engaged during independant learning times. Using Chromebooks, my students can listen to an author read fluently and phrased. Students can also practice our weekly spelling words using online spelling resources. Chromebooks are also helpful tools while conducting research. They will be an integral part of balanced literacy in my classroom.
