At our Elementary, we regularly invite families & caretakers into our school to learn about ways they can best support their learners at home. As a Title I reading specialist, part of my role is facilitating this active engagement. While I could simply provide the information in a slideshow & send families home, I feel like this doesn't foster the deep family-school connection we strive to foster. Providing a welcoming environment allows our parents & caretakers to feel like they are part of our Elementary family. They feel comfortable & safe to share our questions, concerns, and celebrations. Once they feel at ease in our environment, they begin to actively engage in our learning. They are eager to learn & take home the strategies we offer. They also help us to plan for future events by letting us know their individual needs. Currently, I cart home decor & supplies to and from school during event weeks. Having these items on site, organized with proper storage, will ensure that I can easily access these materials and they can be used for other school wide event purposes. Help me to plan for & provide this welcoming environment for all!
