As a new teacher I am always looking for new and exciting ways to make learning fun, but also easier and more accessible to general education and struggling students. Technology is an awesome resource to utilize, but the amount of technology we have in our classrooms does not match the need. In the world we live in today it is critical for children to be literate with the technological advances we experience daily. Technology such as iPads and computers help with reading, writing, typing, and even mathematical computational skills. I have seen first hand the amazing results students have achieved with the aid, and use of technology. Each year I am also blessed to service a handful of special education resource room children who struggle with a range of speaking, listening, reading and writing deficiencies, who benefit greatly from technical assistance. Among these students, not only does it help produce results, but I have seen first hand how it builds confidence in students who might not have been able to achieve these kinds of accomplishments before. The problem I run into within my classroom is that first, we have 12 iPads that serve 30 students. Secondly, students are unable to use many of the resources accessible on the iPad without a keyboard. Many of the programs we use require a keyboard. In 5th grade, we write many essays throughout the year and typing a 5 paragraph essay on an iPad is complicated, horribly time-consuming and fosters poor typing skills. These keyboards will make the world of a difference. It will maximize my students' ability to use the limited amount of resources we do have and use them to their full potential.
