Flexible seating empowers students to take ownership of their learning by discovering through choice where and how they learn best. Learning these things about themselves at a young age will benefit them for years to come. Flexible seating teaches students to be responsible learners. I was amazed at how many of my students made good seating choices independently when given the authority to do so. Flexible seating allows students to sit to learn instead of learning to sit. They are able to discover on their own where and how they learn best, which can save the teacher a lot of time previously spent figuring it out. Flexible seating enhances student engagement and reduces behavior issues. I found out that it is a great classroom management tool. The children are gaining the control they desire, while learning that with power comes responsibility. Through the power of choice they are learning important life skills. I am very excited about this new flexible adventure. I believe that the stand up desk, adjustable table, and wobble chairs I chose will help me begin to create a learning environment that meets all my students’ learning needs. The adjustable rectangular table will provide opportunities for social learning. It can be adjusted for chair or standing work and it can be lowered for a more cozy floor sitting activity. The stand up desk is perfect for students who have trouble sitting for long periods or those who just need to stretch. The foot swing bar allows for movement that is quiet and will not disrupt learning. Finally, I chose the wobble chairs to provide students with the opportunity for safe movement in a chair that was built for that purpose. Overall, I believe that these seating options will increase student engagement, decrease distractions, and prevent many classroom disruptions. Thanks for helping us to be flexible!
