I have the pleasure of teaching in Chicago Public Schools as a Special Education Teacher for grades 6th-8th. My school is a beckon of hope in a community that is ravaged by high poverty and violence. Within our four walls, students receive shelter, free meals, emotional support, education, and encouragement to face the outside community. Now, let me break my class down. I have a total of 30 students on my caseload (6 girls, 24 boys). I teach 1 child with Autism, 2 with mild cognitive disorders, 3 with other health impairments, 10 with emotional/behavioral disorders and 14 with severe learning disabilities. They range in ability, strength, weakness and personality, but they all have one thing in common; a hunger to learn and succeed academically. Sadly, many of my students with disability are reading at a preprimer-2nd grade level.
