My school is Urban City and very high poverty level. 95 percent of students qualify for free and reduced lunch.
This year I am teaching a Kindergarten/1st grade combination class. In my class, most parents work multiple jobs just to support their families. This of course leaves kids taking care of kids and lacks parental supervision at home. It is also common for multiple families to live in the same house. Which can lead to a lot of chaos and unstructured living environment. Unfortunately, we also have many family members who are incarcerated or have unfortunate deaths arise.
To help make school a safe and fun learning environment, I try to incorporate new and engaging strategies. In hopes that their time at school will be a distraction from the outside world. I want my students to be able to focus on learning and just being a kid.
