My students are ages 11-14 and live in a high-poverty area. About 90% are English Language Learners and are first-generation Hispanics. Many come into 6th grade reading at the 4th grade level or below, which makes reading & writing grade level texts extremely difficult. I have been tasked with working with these students to increase their reading levels and test scores so they can be successful in their other classes, as well as to motivate them to love to read and be confident in their ability to read.
