It’s the year 2020 and Physical Education across the country is seeing a huge transformation. No, not because of COVID-19 but because of the new, non-traditional sports and activities being covered in class. Look, I love dodgeball as much as the next person but why play that when there’s so many other new and exciting games to learn? The sole focus of every Physical Education class is based on a single question: How will this class motivate the student to remain active for life? I teach Physical Education at the high school level and have seen a dramatic shift in student participation. I teach at a high school where 60.7% of the students come from a low-income household where after school sports and extracurricular activities are out of the question for most families. Because of this, I believe it is my duty as a physical educator to provide as much access to coaching, activities, equipment, and competition as possible during school hours. I have recently proposed a new P.E. class titled, “Dual and Individual Recreation Sports” and like any new class or program there is a start-up cost. Your donation will alleviate the costs of starting an on campus, 9 hole disc golf course. The goal of this disc golf course is to introduce a new activity that involves both skills and physical activity to the student. Disc golf is a sport that can be played competitively or recreationally for a lifetime. Thank you for your time and let’s keep these students active!
