Children learn best through hands-on, active learning. Their comprehension and ability to retain information are stronger when we don't just show them, but we let them DO. Exploration and visual learning allow students to solve and creatively think on a more connected level. They can use their materials to work independently, solving real-world problems. By giving my students their own set of 120 unifix cubes, they will have the resources they need to effectively represent and solve math problems aligned with the first-grade expectations and standards. Having individual sets also allows for differentiation and variety among different students while they work. These kits will be accessible to them at any time they need, kept in their desks so they always have a manipulative if needed.
