Makerspace is a space where students gain hands-on experiences to make, create, and invent new things. Research has shown that educational makerspaces can have a significant impact on student learning and development. Makerspaces were recently identified as one of six important developments in educational technology for K-12 education by the New Media Consortium (NMC) Horizon Report for 2015, which states, “Makerspaces are increasingly being looked to as a method for engaging learners in creative, higher-order problem-solving through hands-on design, construction, and iteration.” With a makerspace in our classroom, my students will be inspired to ask questions, build knowledge, and discover new strengths and interests. The point of school is to inspire curiosity and interest in learning more, and that is exactly what a makerspace does. The makerspace encourages students to wonder, make careful observations, and thoughtful interpretations. In addition to a variety of materials (legos, play-doh, building blocks, tools, circuits, batteries, etc.) our classroom makerspace will include a Makey Makey Invention kit and an Ozobot Bit Coding Robot. The Makey Makey Invention kit is a kit that turns everyday objects into touchpad and combine them with the internet. For example, students can turn a banana into a computer keyboard. The Ozobot is a small robot that introduces students to the world of coding allows students to start coding with the stroke of a marker. Makerspace give students a tactile and kinesthetic experience that shows them how and why a concept works. As the students work through a particular problem, they are encouraged to come up new and innovative ideas. My classroom makerspace will encourage minds and allow students to collaborate to create solutions.
