I teach at an "Alternative School." This means that these students have been unsuccessful in a regular education setting. The majority of students enrolled come from poverty. These children are not very excited about learning. They have had failing grades for numerous years or just don't believe they can learn. Many of them don't have access to books or computers outside of school. Studies show that students coming from poverty enter kindergarten with a significantly lower vocabulary due to the lack of conversation and exposure to literature. The parents of our students are more worried about feeding their children than reading a nightly bedtime story. These students can work hard when motivated and deserve to have the same resources or more than the more affluent schools. I plan on being that teacher that hooks them into science. I need your help in doing just that!
