Like many schools, our classroom has fluorescent lights. Many of our students have heightened sensitivity to light due to sensory processing differences. The flicker and brightness of the traditional classroom lighting can be highly distracting to our kiddos' ability to explore and learn. Our staff has been exploring alternatives to the overhead lights but have hit some barriers. For example, we are located in a part of the building that gets very limited natural light. We have also tried using lamps, but students with visual impairments have trouble with the shadows that are created. These light filters would reduce the intensity of our classroom lights and, in turn, create a warm and inviting classroom for learning. Students do their best work when they are in a space that feels warm, safe, and comfortable. Adapting the overhead lighting can help create this space for a more engaged group of kids!
