When I was a kid, I would lock myself in my closet with a flashlight, a pillow, a blanket, and a book...then I would get reading! There was something about hiding away from reality and getting totally immersed in whatever universe I was reading that helped grow my love of reading. This is everything I want for my students- to fall in love with reading just as I did. I realized very quickly, though, that this doesn't often happen while sitting at a desk for long periods of time. I decided that I wanted to incorporate flexible seating options in my classroom. Providing students with alternative seating to read books can allow them to focus solely on the text, while also allowing them to forget the reality they may need to escape from. Alternative seating in our classroom can provide students with opportunities to find a small crevice in our learning space and jump into their next adventure. With the comfortable seating options, I hope to offer daily reading opportunities. I also want to begin "flashlight Fridays"; where students (and myself) read in the dark with a flashlight, as I did so many years ago in my closet. Maybe they can bring blankets and pillows to make themselves comfortable! Needless to say, student desks and chairs are not the best places to fight dragons or make connections with characters. I believe with alternative seating, I can foster a love of reading like no other!
