I believe that every child has the potential to be musical. In music class we sing, move, analyze, improvise, arrange, compose, work together, problem solve, and take risks. I hope to inspire my students to become lifelong musicians and understand being a lifelong musician takes many forms: listening with understanding to music, singing in your car or on stage, producing music as a DJ, playing an instrument for fun or professionally. With iPads, the possibilities are endless. Having four mini iPads in my music classroom will empower my students to interact with and create music in a whole new way; every one of my 550-600 students will benefit. Here are just a few ways I plan on using the iPads in my classroom: in band/string lessons my students will record themselves and self-assess their performances, play along with background tracks that track their intonation, notes, etc. providing feedback in real time, and compose their own songs. In lower grades (1-2), my students will use multiple apps to learn about the orchestra, assess their singing voice, arrange songs, create rhythms, and "play" with music. In third grade, my students will use multiple apps to learn how to read music, arrange and write their own songs using notation, track their singing voices, practice recorder skills, and once again, "play" with music. In fourth and fifth grades, my students will engage in music production by creating loops, background beats, and music videos using apps such as Garageband, DrumPad24, and Novation. My students are hardworking, diverse, and curious; they inspire me everyday. Please help me acquire the necessary equipment to take their learning to the next level.
