According to Lucy Calkins, Founder of Teacher's College Reading and Writing Project, a classroom library should contain at least 1,500 books. The classroom library should provide students with a variety of fiction and nonfiction books, with a range of different levels. Nonfiction books challenge the students in a different way than fiction books. In addition to providing students with the opportunity to learn about the world through nonfiction books, nonfiction books are more challenging for students to read. Therefore, learning strategies for reading the nonfiction texts will help them as the texts grow harder in the upper grades. Children need to be exposed to the literature of nonfiction texts at a young age. As a teacher, I want to provide my students with the resources to help them grow to their full potential!
