My students are first graders in a public elementary school that services over 600 students in rural Pennsylvania. If you know a first grader, you know their quest for knowledge. Just walk into any first grade classroom and you will find experts on quite a selection of topics ranging from dinosaurs, dogs, bugs, states, presidents, monster trucks, football, and music. Many times they can even take on the role of teacher! On the other hand, I can't tell you how many questions they have during just one day that I may not have the answer to and how many times I have missed that teachable moment because we didn't have access to the Internet on a working computer. There are so many ways functioning technology can instantly feed these inquiring minds! In addition to the research aspect, there are endless, amazing, and free educational sites online that would be great for differentiating instruction for students needing remediation or enrichment on a math or language arts concept.
