As a Language Arts teacher, it is important for me to offer multicultural literature in order to create a culturally responsive teaching practice. My students like to read stories that they can relate to and reflect upon with each page turned. My students will use these materials in The Writing Strategies Book: Your Everything Guide to Developing Skilled Writers in literature circles and engage in effective reading, writing, listening and speaking activities to gain a deeper understanding of the text. Students will have the opportunity to make real-world connections with high-interest novels that will help them foster a better understanding of themselves and others. These books like The House on Mango Street will help my students achieve the standards for my class by using novels they can relate to. Not only will they be able to make connections but they will also be able to have discussions on current issues while using literature.
