My students are high schoolers at a small, culturally diverse school in Hawaii. Although they are incredibly bright, intelligent, and creative individuals with strong opinions, they have little or no experience with literature. Attending a public school here makes them acutely aware of many of the themes including issues about social, cultural, and political diversity, that can help inform their understanding of language and literature.
