Students need to move. We ask too much of them when we require they are seated and still all day. Research has shown that more movement increases learning and decreases off task behavior. Letting students pick their own seating gives them controlled choices that leads to ownership of their learning. I started with a few small seating choices this year and the results were amazing! Students would get up and move when they felt a little antsy or felt they were not focusing. I noticed certain students would always move to the front on the floor during math or always pick the stools in the corner during independent reading. I also had students who always preferred the standing table for certain activities. They became advocates for their learning and what worked best for them. My students need different sensory input seating options such as a rug, stability balls, and chair bands.
