I teach 2nd grade in inner-city Los Angeles. I have the most precious, hard-working students and parents who mainly come from humble beginnings and homes. They are so appreciative of anything I buy them and take great care of their things. Our school is mainly Latino with a few Caucasian children, a few African American children and a few Asian children. They love learning and are so enthusiastic about cooking and gardening. I would really like to instill the "Joy of Cooking" to them and also teach them healthy ways to eat by cooking with them. There is a great percentage of childhood obesity here and they bring lots of "sugary-snacks" to school. I hope to change their eating habits by planting, caring for, and harvesting fruits and vegetables with them. When we plant, many of them will tell me that they plant things with their grandparents when they visit them in Guatemala or Mexico. It makes nice connections to the earth and their home cultures.
