My students live in a poverty-stricken, inner-city neighborhood in Arizona. Just making it to school can be a great deal of difficulty for some. However, once inside the school, our students are safe and ready to grow through learning and experience. My kids are the type to crack a joke or bust a move whenever the mood fits, but if you show them that you are truly there to support them, they will aim high and succeed with your guidance. At Sunland Elementary, our motto is "We do it right, and we do it right the first time." As simple as that may sound, it carries with it a great voice and impact. So in order for our Beginning Concert Bands to succeed, we need to follow the same creed. We are building a new culture of musicians and artists, humans with compassion, empathy and feelings and a way to express them.
