"When given the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind"- RJ Palacio, "Wonder" As I teach students at any age, the most important lesson above all else is to be kind. Be kind to your friends, family, elders; to every single person you meet. We explore quotes each week surrounding kindness & empathy, such as "Be kind, for everyone is fighting a hard battle" (Plato). As we come together to discuss these quotes and what they mean to us, I am constantly amazed at the thoughtful insights these 11 & 12 year-old students have. They truly understand that life can be difficult as they experience hardships of their own every single day. Each year, our ELA classes explore various genres of reading, some altogether as a class and some tailored to each student's interest. This year, 6th grade has implemented the realistic fiction story "Wonder" by RJ Palacio, where we follow the journey of Auggie, a 5th grader who faces judgement and pain all of his life because of the way he looks. Every day, we have new discussions about how the way we treat others can impact their lives forever. Unfortunately, each class only has 1 single copy of "Wonder" that the teachers purchased with their own money. It would be a dream-come-true if our class could possibly attain an entire class set of "Wonder" (1 for each student), so that we can follow Auggie's journey and continue to explore the importance of empathy together.
