It's been two years since Superstorm Sandy, and our little Shore town is still rebuilding. As we start another school year with our students (some of whom are still waiting for their homes to be rebuilt, repaired, and/or lifted), I strive to create a classroom space that is a place of comfort and safety for my students. In my classroom, I use reading and writing as tools to help my students heal and grow. Through daily independent self-selected reading they can lose themselves in a good book. They can also learn valuable life lessons and identify with characters facing similar struggles. Similarly, writing provides an outlet for recording memories, both good and bad; reflecting on life experiences; and creatively expressing thoughts and feelings. With your help, I hope to provide a space in my classroom where students can read and write comfortably for extended periods of time.
