This project will benefit the majority of the students at Oak Hill Academy, as communication is a primary concern for all of the students at varying levels. Increasing a students' ability to be an autonomous and competent communicator will positively impact their ability to fully engage and participate in various academic tasks throughout their day as they will have greater understanding of directions being given, vocabulary presented within the lesson, as well as the ability to express themselves effectively and efficiently when asked to provide opinions, comments, answer questions, etc. Providing students access to a functional communication system to express themselves, that is the same communication system that the teacher is using and modeling throughout the day, allows increased transparency for communication for both students and teachers. This transparency may decrease behavioral disruptions due to confusion on the part of the student and/or teacher and increase the consistency and predictability of the day, which is very important for students on the Autism spectrum.
