An elementary music classroom should have plenty of space for movement, including dancing. Students often sit on the floor in an elementary music room for this reason. The large rug I have requested would help keep the students safely distanced from one another, would be more comfortable on their bottoms, and would allow them to sit just close enough together to play and learn as an ensemble. The stools are for playing larger instruments, when students may be too small to play sitting on the floor, but may not have the stamina yet to stand for the entire class. These changes would drastically improve our classroom dynamics. Currently, I have 24 student desks just squeezed into the room, with just enough distance between them to meet social distancing requirements. There is no room for movement, so students may solely stand behind their chairs to dance. They cannot learn folk dances or move about the room. Being able to remove the desks from the room while still having visually clear and comfortable seating for my students would make a huge difference for our class.
