The best way to help students improve their reading is to read more! In my classroom, reading is a priority and expectation. Each class period students have time to read independently. The only goal of this is to help foster a love for reading. They are not assessed on their independent reading. The biggest struggle I have with middle school readers is not their reading abilities but rather their perception of reading. Students tell me, "It's boring!" or, "It's no cool to read!" or, "It's too much." I could tell them that studies show a positive correlation between the amount of reading for pleasure a child does and their grades at school. However, that is not enough to convince readers that have never fallen in love with books before. With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of topics, genres, and authors that will allow them to read independently! And most importantly, experience texts that mirror them and their identities. My hope is that this library opens a new world for students inside of my classroom as well as at home.
