What happens to used paper? Most paper is thrown away in landfills or is burned. If we recycle paper we save landfill space and use these valuable wood fibers again. Students will not throw away that old, office paper or unwanted wrapping paper, and then they will turn it into a piece of art by making new paper with it. Making your own paper from old paper is similar to what happens in a paper recycling mill. At a mill, the pulp is put into a machine with a long-moving screen. The water drips through the screen. Then the screen moves through the part of the machine that presses and dries the pulp. Students will recycle old paper. They will use their fine motor skills to rip the old paper. They will learn about the states of matter. They will practice measurement and time. In the end, they will create cards and envelopes using their artistic skills.
