“I want to be a veterinarian because I love animals” is a common statement made in my 55-60 veterinary science students in the first week of school. But after learning more about the students, you quickly learn that many of the students haven’t worked or ever owned a pet. Sonora High School sits in an large suburb city where 42% of students face social economic disadvantages as well other learning challenges such as English as a second language (76% of students are minorities) and approximately 10 percent of special education students. Since many of these students come from a family of blue-collard workers, it is also a challenge to get them to think of themselves as future scientist or researcher. It is also no surprise that they haven’t ever cared for their own pet since many live in small apartments or have never traveled to the local zoo just 15 miles away. So I challenge myself, as a teacher to create a love for science as well as learning using their interest in animals.
