My students are transitioning from the relative ease of middle school into the rigors of the high school environment. They are eager readers that often will judge a book by its cover, so fresh books tend to be alluring while the old class set often elicit complaints. Even though many of my students read below grade level, they are excited and willing participants in read-alouds! Recently we read 90% of Romeo and Juliet in class and they did an amazing job with a Reader's Theater activity. Our school is a vocational school in they Westside of Baltimore. Many students travel through the center of the city to catch the buses that run west from the city center. My students are savvy and smart. They have great hopes for their futures, from being the next Bernie Mac and a pediatrician, to becoming a cable installer and a homemaker.
