My students live in a very rural county in Tennessee. Their environment is probably some the most beautiful and awe inspiring in the country. We have mountains, white water streams,cliffs, gorges, state and national parks and clean fresh air. Where our natural resources are abundant, our cultural resources are lacking. Each small city within the county supports a tiny library and enjoys a local annual festival. There are no bookstores, coffee houses, theaters, museums or art galleries. Family is highly valued and hunting and fishing are the sports of choice. The schools are not very diversely populated and exposure to different cultures is mainly through books and film. My students are hungry for knowledge of the world and ways to satisfy their creative minds.
