Our class has 8 amazing students with autism across 3 grades. Our students come from different wards from within DC, not just from the surrounding neighborhood. Our class is self-contained, meaning the majority of each students' learning takes place within our room. Many of our students also receive some instruction the general education setting and are able to interact & socialize with typically developing peers during the day. Autism is a developmental disability that affects the way our students interact and communicate with others. Autism is a spectrum disorder and our students' skills & abilities fall across the range of the spectrum. Some students are near grade level academically and some are not yet communicating verbally. Each student is unique and has their own strengths, gifts, & support needs. All of our students need support in communication, behavior, social interaction, and daily living skills.
