Imagine a world where the only book put in front of you is a text book. Imagine a world where you do not get to choose what you read, but rather a curriculum dictates the next page you will turn. Would you love to read? There are 20 students in my 4th/5th grade Spanish immersion classroom in a high poverty urban school. Their reading abilities range from 1st to 8th grade in both Spanish and English and their interests are equally diverse. I am inspired by my students' myriad of life experiences that allow them to engage with subject matter at an incredibly high level. However, I also know their diverse strengths and needs cannot be addressed with a one-size fits all curriculum. The majority of my students have very limited access to books and technology at home. School is their opportunity for literacy. My resilient and passionate students are in incredible need of differentiated novels and non-fiction texts to keep them inspired and support them in their reading growth this year.
