In South Carolina, in fifth grade, we study the beach and the ocean floor. Because we are a high poverty/low-income school, most of my students haven't experienced things that we consider "typical", like going to the beach for instance. Therefore, in order for my students to have a meaningful learning experience, I wanted my students to be able to manipulate sand to help them to be able to understand some of our science topics relating to the beach. My students are required to know ocean landforms, so I thought it would be engaging for my students to be able to create ocean landforms using the kinetic sand. We can also extend it to our study of magnetism! Kinetic sand is easy to clean up and easy to manipulate without the use of water. It's cohesive and quite fascinating! Learning should be a positive experience and this project will allow students to authentically show their knowledge of the content using real manipulatives! The addition of this manipulative would be fostered in many learning opportunities for my science students and could be used time and time again, for years to come!
