In developing their self confidence, I've discovered that group activities help to bring out the quieter students and focus the more outgoing students. Murals, puzzles, collages work best when the students can stretch out and organize their materials. Many of my students like to work on the floor, especially during collaborative projects. Mats would make it easy for them to concentrate for longer periods of time while on the floor. Having colored mats using the color wheel adds a learning connection that is readily accessible. The added plus would be the added color to the room. The matswill make their environment more inviting!
