Our old, but lovingly maintained school serves a part of our city with a very high poverty rate. Students come to us eager to learn, but lacking many skills that wealthier students learn at home. Our staff is dedicated to providing them with all they need to be successful. The school system provides as many materials as possible, but not everything we need. Like all teachers, I have always bought the rest. The recent hard times have really affected my ability to do that. System budget cuts mean more for me to buy and furlough days mean less for me to buy it with. At this point my lovely, bright, enthusiastic kindergartners are using crayon nubs and newsprint at the art center. Their ability to create what they can imagine is limited by their resources.
