I teach in a pre-k through 6th grade school. My students are preschoolers. Many of the students are inner city kids who come from extreme poverty, their homes have financial and emotional struggles going on. A third of them are immigrants or their families have immigrated here in recent years. They are eager to come to school and experience all the activities and materials we have here. Many of their homes only have the very basic of living items. So to come to school where there are books, legos, dolls, art supplies, and someone to show them how to use them is so exciting for them. These children run off the bus with really wide grins on their faces. They are so happy to be at school and see what fun things we are going to do today. Teaching in this area also means that the money to pay for schools is very slim. Much of the extra supplies come from the teacher's purse, but it is worth to see them smile.
