All of the students in my classroom have needs related to an Autism Spectrum Disorder and have difficulties in the area of social-emotional skills, communication, and play skills. The students in this classroom have high level needs, and they are not yet able to participate in a pre-school classroom with a larger group of students. They need a structured environment with a small number of students and many direct teaching opportunities. In this classroom we purposefully teach the basic social and communication skills that most children learn through their environment. The students need support in order to participate in many of these activities. The school is located in an urban setting and serves many children who qualify for free or reduced lunch. The district has limited funding and early childhood programs rarely receive the materials they need.
