These books, such as Drowned City: Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans, Trevor Noah - Born a Crime, or Poet X allow students to both see themselves reflected and provide a window into the realities of their peers. I teach both history and Language Arts, providing opportunities for students to synthesize information and recognize how everyone's story should be included when studying people, governments and social structures. Whether reading realistic fiction or informational texts, the value for young adults in ascertaining the catalysts and threads that relate to the formation of laws, societal norms, movements and cultural shifts is transformative for them! I am excited for my students to read these books and the discussions/projects that will be generated.
