I teach at a school in which the majority of my students live in high poverty neighborhoods. I have students who have lived in the same neighborhood their entire lives and have never traveled elsewhere. I have students who immigrated to America to escape persecution, stepping into my classroom without knowing any English. I have students who have been retained so many times that they are 17 years old in their freshman year of high school. I have students whose parents want fiercely to see them succeed. But what most of my students have in common is that they have struggled with reading their entire life and have internalized the belief that they are just not good at it. Despite all the challenges they face, they are a vivacious and inspiring group of young people who really need one thing: for adults to invest in them, trust them, and believe in them.
