Currently my students view educational videos like Bill Nye the Science Guy, Reading Rainbow, Rock and Learn phonics and Sid the Science Kid on a television set that was manufactured in the early 80s. I use the television daily en lieu of the Promethean board, because the seating surrounding our TV in my library is more homey. The purpose behind this is to help students subconsciously correlate a learning environment with a home environment. My hopes are that students will find learning more comfortable and less institutionalized thus easing the transition of learning only at school into learning at home as well. With stations like PBS, students are often exposed to educational programming, however, they are not accustomed to linking and correlating the information they are receiving at home and applying it to their current level of knowledge on a particular subject rooted in the materials they’ve learned at school. I would like to be able to continue to show my students videos, not only the ones available to me on DVD, but through streaming and the Internet as well. However our current set up makes the integration of newer technology impossible.
