As an extended time and learning school, my students are in class three hundred (300) more hours a year than the typical elementary school student. Their long eight (8) hour day needs to be filled with high interest learning opportunities to keep them engaged while they are in school. My second graders are diverse learners on a continuum of different learning levels. They come to school with different learning styles and different levels of background knowledge. Some of the children come to school telling me they are not "smart." and they "can't do the work." My response is always the same, "We are all smart. All we need to do is to figure out how we are smart." Some students are movers and shakers and some are independent learners. Some students are logical thinkers and some abstract. Some students need to use their hands to explore while others need to read to find out. All learning must be differentiated.
