This activity was created by CPalms, a web site dedicated to aiding teachers with great ideas for projects. Without the materials, this activity will not be possible. They are essential in the progress of the experiment. The activity is meant to allow students to use a variety of skills they have acquired throughout a statistics unit in a problem-based STEM challenge. My students will be able to gather data using a sensor to assist in validating a claim, use a variety of statistical analyses and graphs to draw conclusions about the data gathered, and plan and carry out an investigation to validate a claim. A tea kettle will allow the students to keep the coffee hot throughout the whole experiment. A stopwatch will be helpful since water will be poured into different cups of different materials for exactly five minutes each. Different cups will be needed to see which one is more effective retaining heat. The possibility to connect scenarios with mathematics will have a positive impact on their ability and willingness to learn. The students will have to make their own conclusions based on the statistical analysis of the data collected.
