Our elementary school is a Title 1 school, with over a 65% Hispanic population. My students come to me for math intervention. They are significantly behind in their skill mastery and the conventional ways of teaching are not reaching them. These children are very capable, but need learning opportunities that allow them to not only see the relevance of what they are learning, but also to get involved in it - using every one of their 5 senses. They do not have the typical family experiences at home, so anything we can do to bridge the gaps in learning, while exposing them to skills they can use later, and fostering their natural curiosity, enthusiasm and interest, will help them to retain and apply their math skills in the everyday world. I want these kids to love learning, to be the first in their family to attend college, to see a bright future that can give them the chance to rise above their circumstances. Simply put - I believe in them.
